One teaching method you can use tomorrow morning. Seriously, I- I- I tried this exact thing on Tuesday and it totally saved my third-period lesson from, uh, well, complete disaster. It's called a hinge question, and the whole idea is that you design a single, very specific multiple-choice question and you drop it right at the- the- the pivot point of your class. Like, right where the next twenty minutes of your lesson completely depends on whether the kids actually understand the concept or if they're just, you know, nodding along politely.

Right, the pivot point. And this isn't just a- a clever classroom trick, is it? It comes straight from Dylan Wiliam, writing in the September 1, 2015 issue of Educational Leadership. That's an ASCD publication, for anyone listening who wants to go deeper. The article is called Designing Great Hinge Questions, and- and Wiliam's central argument is that this isn't a quiz for your gradebook. It's not a summative test. It is a thirty-second diagnostic tool designed to tell you, the teacher, whether to move on or stop and reteach right then and there.

Yes! Exactly. A thirty-second decision tool. Because we- we- we all do this thing where we teach a concept, and then we look out at the room and ask, "Does everyone get it?" And of course, the same three kids in the front row nod, or- or someone raises their hand, and we think, great, they've got it, let's move on. But that's just, um... we're just sampling the volunteers there, aren't we? We aren't checking the hinge. If the rest of the class is lost, and we move on to the independent practice, we're- we're basically just sending them off to practice doing it wrong.

Quite. You're teaching the air at that point. Wiliam has this- this brilliant quote in the piece. He says, because lessons never go according to plan, teachers should build plan B into plan A. Which I- I adore, because it acknowledges the messy reality of the classroom. You aren't failing if you have to pivot; you're actually being responsive. But you can only build that plan B if you have whole-class evidence. Not just, uh, like you said, the- the eager volunteers, but a contribution from every single student in the room, simultaneously.

Exactly. Every single kid. Because if you don't get that whole-class data, you're- you're essentially flying blind. You think you're on track, but you might be leaving three-quarters of the room behind without even realizing it until you grade their exit tickets that night. And by then, it's too late. The- the- the time has passed, and you have to start all over again the next day.

What makes the question actually work tomorrow?

So, how do we actually make this work tomorrow? Wiliam outlines four very strict rules for a proper hinge question. First, every single student has to answer, which you can do with finger signals, small whiteboards, or, um, simple ABCD cards. Second, it must take about thirty seconds for the kids to respond. Third, you, the teacher, must be able to assess the responses in under ten seconds. And fourth, the most critical part: the- the incorrect options, the distractors, must be designed to map to very specific, predictable misconceptions.

Oh, the- the distractors are everything. That's where the magic is. Like, in my third-period ELA class on Tuesday, we were looking at argumentative writing. My hinge question was, "Which of these sentences from the article is the author's main claim?" Option A was the actual claim. But options B, C, and D weren't just, like, random sentences. They were- they were very specific pieces of evidence. So, if a student chose B, I didn't just know they got it wrong; I knew they were specifically confusing a supporting detail with the overall claim. It- it gives you this instant window into their brain.

That ELA example is perfect, Renata, because it shows how the wrong answer is actually more useful than the right one. Wiliam uses a- a seventh-grade math example about finding the area of a semicircle. He designed the multiple-choice options based on the exact errors kids make. One option was the result of forgetting to divide the full circle's area by two. Another was squaring the diameter instead of the radius. So, when the students held up their cards, the teacher didn't just see a sea of wrong answers; they could instantly see, oh, seventy percent of them forgot to halve the area. The misconception was exposed in real time.

It's so powerful. And it gives you a very clear decision rule. Wiliam says if about eighty percent of your students get the question right, you're good to move on. You can do a quick peer-to-peer check with the twenty percent who missed it. But if it's- if it's less than eighty percent, you stop. You do not move on. You use the exact misconception that the wrong answers revealed to reteach the concept right there, using a different angle.

Right. That eighty percent threshold is a great rule of thumb. Because, let's be honest, we've all been there when we realize they're nodding but not ready, and- and our instinct is to start a long, winding class discussion to clarify things. But a fast, whole-class check using a hinge question beats a- a long discussion hands down. It's precise, it's fast, and it stops you from wasting precious minutes guessing who actually understands the material.
